UPDATED. OPPOSITION LEADERS REITERATE CALL FOR PEACEFUL PROTESTS AS AUTOMAIDAN PROVOKES STANDOFF WITH MILITIA

Tens of thousands of protesters hve refused to be dispersed on Hrushevska Street (nr the entrance to the Dynamo Kyiv stadium) by police firing tear gas as tensions continue to escalate following another mass protest meeting earlier today in Kyiv's Independence square. 

During the rally, representatives of the Automaidan threatened to head for Ukraine's Parliament within 30 minutes if opposition leaders failed to name the leader of the protests.  Militia blocked the route.

A stand-off ensued during which "provocateurs" began hurling missiles at militia in reply to unrelenting amounts of tear gas being fired into the crowds.  Many people have been taken to hospital. 

Opposition leaders Yatseniuk and Tiahnybok reiterated the need for the for calm and for protesters not to resort to violence. Shortly afterwards, Vitaliy Klychko appeared on the stage calling on the President not to employ the use of force against protesters.

A report at 20.45 local Kyiv time says that UDAR leader Vitaliy Klitschko has been allowed into Mezhyhiya to hold talks with V. Yanukovych.

The stand-off, which began around 4.00 pm local time, continues.
