TWO HIGH-RANKING OFFICIALS SUSPENDED AS UKRAINE PROTESTS CONTINUE

14.12.13

The round-table meeting between the Ukrainian President, Prime Minister, opposition and church leaders and student activist ended yesterday without any concrete decisions being taken to end the current crisis in the country.

While the Euromaidan protest coninued today in Kyiv's Independence Square, the authorities organised transport for their own supporters to travel to Kyiv to attend a separate "anti-Euromaidand" rally in the capital's European Square.  Demonstrators were kept apart by a line of riot police.

Meanwhile Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka told journalists today that Kyiv's mayor Olexander Popov and Security Council deputy chief Volodymyr Syvkovych have been suspended and are being probed on suspicion of pressuring Kyiv's chief of police chief "to use violence" against protesters.
