Several thousand of Ukraine's militia/Berkut were deployed in Central Kyiv last night in a move designed to clear the heart of the capital of protesters and regain control of Kyiv's City Hall. However, they were met with considerable resistance and were not able to successfully remove all barricades.

There are currently over 35,000 protesters continuing to occupy Independence Square this morning and the number is increasing with fresh groups of protesters now on their way from all areas of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko this morning stated that no forcible dispersal of the protest rally at Independence Square in Kyiv is planned.

Last nights actions were condemned by US Secretary of State John Kerry who issued a strong statement, expressing the United States' “disgust with the decision of Ukrainian authorities to meet the peaceful protest ... with riot police, bulldozers, and batons, rather than with respect for democratic rights and human dignity”.
