POLICE DISMANTLE BARRICADES AND CAMPS OF PROTESTERS

10.12.13

Several thousand Ukrainian militia backed up by Berkut moved in early this morning and dismantled the barricades and camps of protesters demonstrating on the corners of Luteranska and Bankova streets.

Unidentified plain clothed people followed behind the police to remove the barricades/camps. Protesters identified them as "titushky" (provocatuers) now tasked to help with the clear-up operation.

The commandant of the destroyed tent city said that there were about fifty protesters at the roadblock up against a few thousand militia/Berkut.

Opposition leaders have urged supporters to defend Independence Square.

Yesterday US Vice President Joe Biden expressed "deep concern" during a telephone conversation with President Yanukovych. In a statement issued by the White House, Mr Biden said that "violence has no place in a democratic society and is incompatible with our strategic relationship".

Other main events overnight, the power to Kyiv's City Administration was turned off for about an hour before being switched on again.  A large number of Special Forces («спецпризначенці») moved from Vasylkiv outside Kyiv towards the capital's centre. "Reporters without Borders" has condemned the attacks on opposition media outlets yesterday.
