DECISION POSTPONED - UKRAINE MUST DO MORE TO CLINCH AGREEMENT

18.11.13

Euronews is reporting that the EU today postponed taking a final decision on whether to sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine.

All eyes will be on Kyiv tomorrow after the EU's two envoys, Kwasniewski and Cox, said that Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada has its last opportunity to adopt a law allowing the release of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. The EU regards the charges against Tymoshenko to be “politically motivated” and an example of “selective justice.”  According to UNIAN, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle will be in Ukraine tomorrow on a one-day visit but the report does not say whether he will attend Ukraine's parliament.

Meanwhile Reuters have cited a number of European Ministers saying that Ukraine must do more to clinch agreement.  Ukraine must meet the conditions set before the summit Vilnius at the end of this month and that the fate of ex-premier Tymoshenko is crucial to summit outcome. Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger has said that President Yanukovych has the power to make or break the agreement.
