POSTHUMOUS AWARD FOR METROPOLITAN SHEPTYTSKY

04.11.13

Metropolitan Archbishop Andrei Sheptytsky, the spiritual leader of Ukrainian Catholics who headed the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from 1900 until his death on 1 November 1944, has been posthumously honoured by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for his undaunted heroism in saving Jews from the Holocaust.

He is recognised for his courageous efforts to protect Ukrainian Jews from extermination by supplying false identification papers and shelter from the Nazis at a time when such acts were punishable by death.
