GOVERNMENT STANCE ON HOLODOMOR DISMAYS BOLTON COUNCIL

In July HM Government issued a written statement concerning the 1932-33 Holodomor (http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page20199), in which it stated that it “does not judge the evidence is sufficiently unequivocal to categorise the Holodomor as genocide as defined by the 1948 UN Convention on Genocide”.

Last week the Holodomor was again at the forefront of Bolton Council’s attention.

Councillor Cliff Morris, the leader of Bolton Council, which in March unanimously recognised the Holodomor as genocide, expressed disappoinment with the Government’s rather equivocal stance and resolved to raise the issue with Bolton’s MP’s.

Significantly, Bolton Council reaffirmed its commitment to commemorating Ukraine’s Holodomor as part of the town’s annual genocide memorial day.
