UKRAINE MOVING CLOSER TO JOIN CUSTOMS UNION?

Dzerkalo Tyzhnia is reporting that following on from the latest meeting of Presidents Putin and Yanukovych (4 March), governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation have been tasked to find a mutually acceptable formula for Ukraine to join the Customs Union.

A delegation from Ukraine, headed by vice-Premier Yuriy Boyko, was in Moscow this week for talks and, according to the report, Ukraine has agreed to become an "Associate Member" of the Customs Union.

One source said that it will take around two months for the legal framework to be drawn up to create "Associate Membership" withing the CU.

EU leaders made it clear in February, that it is for Ukraine to decide whether it wants to join the EU or the Customs Union.  Membership of both is not an option.
