TIME FOR THE UK TO RECOGNISE THE HOLODOMOR AS GENOCIDE - QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT

31.01.13

Pauline Latham, MP for Mid Derbyshire today raised in Parliament the issue of the Holodomor and said it was time the UK government joined other members of the Commonwealth and recognised the Holodomor as genocide. The reply from the government recognised that the Holodomor was an event of great historical significance that deserved to be better known, and sadly repeated the government line that they do not believe the evidence is clear cut. There is, however, a recognition that historians have different views and there was a promise to keep the evidence under review.

Thanks to the Ukrainian community in Derby who have done so much to raise the profile of the Holodomor with their local politicians, which led to the question today and keeps the issue of genocide recognition in the mind of the government.
